Interior design upgrade: oak planks from mafi decorate the frequent flyer lounge at Innsbruck Airport

Down-to-earth instead of aloof - this is how the "Tyrol Lounge" at Innsbruck Airport presents itself. Together with her team, the Innsbruck architect and designer Nina Mair designed a cozy frequent flyer lounge that engenders relaxation before departure.

"The legal and technical requirements for surfaces and materials in an airport lounge are particularly demanding. With the product from mafi, we were able to use an oak surface with a natural look and a pleasant feel. This contributes to the cozy and authentic atmosphere of the room." Nina Mair

A home before traveling

With a clearly structured space and different areas of use, the architectural concept addresses the diverse needs of international guests. Here one can relax in a wing chair, let the alpine panorama take effect, or watch the bustling activity on the airfield. Travelers can also leaf through a book in the library, concentrate on work at one of the acoustically screened workstations, or enjoy food and drinks in a comfortable atmosphere.

In order to create a cozy living room atmosphere in which guests feel right at home, the design team has placed great emphasis on warm light, optimal acoustics and comfortable materials that impress with a pleasant feel. In the choice of furniture and materials, the factors of naturalness, craftsmanship and regionality played an important role. The natural wood floor from mafi fits in perfectly with this overall concept.

Modern dining area with wood

In the restaurant area, designed in the style of a modern Tyrolean lounge, the OAK Vulcano Medium floorboard by mafi was laid, which can score with its extraordinary aesthetics, functionality and healthy living properties. These oak planks get their warm, rich shades of brown through a thermal treatment, for which no chemical additives are needed. In the brushed, natural oiled version, the beautiful grain of the OAK Vulcano Medium floorboard comes into its own.

Object suitable oak floors from Austria

Oak is one of the most durable woods and therefore naturally meets the particular challenges of a frequent flyer lounge. The 3-layer structure of typical mafi natural wood flooring ensures an enormous robustness of the floor covering. The middle layer consists of softwood and absorbs impact sound, which significantly improves room acoustics. Thus, oak plank flooring from mafi is ideal for the object area - and for a project like the "Tyrol Lounge".

Planks from the natural wood specialist mafi not only decorate the floor, but can also lend their positive effect to the indoor climate as wall covering. Surrounded by high-quality oak wood, with a surface refined exclusively with natural oils and free of pollutants and allergens, frequent flyers can comfortably breathe deeply.

This design concept not only appeals to guests from all over the world who enjoy their stopover in the lounge, but also managed to impress the demanding jury, which grants the internationally renowned design award: The Nina Mair Architecture + Design project was awarded the German Design Award 2019.
