Durable decking boards from Austria

Our ash planks are optimized for outdoor use through a special, chemical-free heat treatment. The resulting play of colors is initially in the dark brown spectrum and will develop a natural patina over the years depending on care and weathering.

Our special surface treatment protects the wood from standing moisture. The invisible screw connection combines aesthetics with increased resistance, as the wood is not damaged.

Quality from Austria

Ash wood is ideal for outdoor use due to its resistance. Our chemical- and pollutant-free thermal treatment gives the planks additional weather protection.

The surface is smooth and planed, which has proven to be the better option against slate and splintering in the long term compared to grooved boards, for example.

Our product data at a glance:

  • MATERIAL: Thermally optimized ash

  • LENGTHS: 1800-4000 mm

  • WIDTHS: 95-120 mm

  • THICKNESS: 21 mm

  • SURFACE: plain-planed

Durable & well thought out

Thanks to our special connection, the wood is not damaged by screws and is therefore more durable. In addition, the surface is minimally rounded, which prevents standing water - this also has a positive effect on resistance. If a plank is damaged, it can be replaced individually.

Our advantages summarized:

  • ORIGIN: Sustainable forestry in Central Europe

  • WEATHER PROTECTION: Minimal rounded plank (cambered) for better drainage of water

  • SUBSTRUCTURE: Installation is possible on almost all surfaces

  • FIXATION: Invisible screw connection, no damage to the wood and therefore significantly improved durability

Simple and robust

Installation

mafi uses the SENOFIX II SX connector from the Austrian premium manufacturer SIHGA. The innovative connector design means that individual planks can be easily replaced. In addition, the wood is not damaged by the invisible screw connection, which increases the service life.

  • Wood-on-wood contact surfaces should be avoided, as these lead to permanent damp patches due to the capillary effect, which in turn cause rotting.

  • Avoid direct contact between the substructure strip and the substrate. When using the SENOFIX connector, there is no direct contact with the substructure as the SENOFIX itself forms the gap. Sufficient distance to the substructure must be provided to ensure optimum ventilation.

    • Distance to surrounding components: min. 20 mm

    • Distance to the substrate: min. 30 mm

    • Distance for a side finish: min. 50 mm

  • The joint width between the boards should be 6 mm. If the joints are narrower, impurities will get stuck, preventing the water from draining properly. We recommend using the appropriate clamp with spacer (available from mafi) during installation. This automatically ensures the minimum joint width and the installation is also made easier by the pull of the clamp.

  • If boards are joined lengthwise (on the front side), a gap of at least 7 mm must be maintained. This longitudinal joint must not lie directly above the substructure strip to allow water and dirt to drain away and prevent waterlogging.

  • Check regularly that all water drains/joints are free of dirt.

  • Wood is a natural product that is exposed to extreme conditions due to the influence of the weather. The varying graying of the wood is a natural process that does not affect the quality.

  • Cracking and slate formation can never be ruled out with decking wood. Regular maintenance and cleaning of the decking increases its service life. At the beginning, natural wood substances may be washed out and cause discoloration of adjacent components.

Underground & foundation:

Wooden decking can be laid on different substrates. Care should always be taken to ensure a professional installation and installation by trained and certified professionals is recommended. Possible substrates are

  • a gravel bed on natural soil
  • a solid surface as a substrate such as existing stone terraces or concreted slabs/surfaces
  • Insulated roof terraces or flat roofs
  • bar-shaped supporting structures such as balconies, walkways made of different materials

The variety of substructures requires different structures and must be checked in each individual case. For the sake of order, it is noted that superstructure heights exceeding 60 cm are to be assessed as statically load-bearing.

Substructure:

The two most frequently used substructures include installation on wood and aluminum profiles.

Both require a structurally stable and load-bearing substrate. It is important to ensure sufficient ventilation and drainage of water to prevent waterlogging (see installation principles). The distance between the substructures for mafi ESCHE Vulcano decking boards should be at maximum 45 cm.

SENOFIX II SX Connector

Installation recommendation

mafi decking boards are equipped with a rounded profile on the long side to enable invisible decking fastening using SENOFIX II SX. The following steps are necessary for installation:

  1. On the first or last plank, the profile must be cut on one side to enable a rectangular finish.
  2. This initial plank must be aligned accordingly and fixed directly to the substructure with stainless steel screws.
  3. The subsequent rows are then installed using the Senofix connector without screwing it down.
  4. In the next step, the planks are pre-tensioned with the appropriate clamp (available from mafi). This makes fixing easier and ensures that the minimum spacing is maintained.
  5. Finally, the planks can be fixed with the supplied screws using the Senofix connector. The screw head must be screwed flush with the top edge of the connector to ensure optimum stability.

Types of installation

Depending on the desired look and conditions on site, the decking boards can be laid in different ways. Continuous installation and the English bond are particularly popular.

Cleaning & care

Regular cleaning

Thanks to our smooth surface, our planks get less dirty as there are fewer uneven areas and grooves in which dirt can accumulate. Fungal and algae infestation is also less likely with the planed, smooth surface.

Cleaning the wooden decking is central to its longevity and the prevention of damage. We recommend the following steps on a regular basis:

  1. Remove coarse dirt: sweep the decking to remove leaves, twigs and other coarse dirt. Use a broom with medium bristles to avoid damaging the wood.
  2. Wet cleaning: Rinse the decking surface with the garden hose and make sure that the decking surface is completely and evenly wet. We do not recommend using a high-pressure cleaner.
  3. Cleaning with cleaning agents: Our natural wood floor soap is also suitable for cleaning our decking boards. To do this, simply apply the soap mixed with water to the planks and work it in with a brush or scrubbing brush in the longitudinal direction of the plank. Take care not to apply too much pressure so that the wood is not damaged. Then rinse the planks with water.

Degreying wood

In addition to cleaning, we also offer a solution to counteract the graying of the wood caused by sunlight.

Over the years and through exposure to UV light, the wood turns gray. If you want to counteract this effect, you can use the mafi graying remover. This reduces the graying of the wood and refreshes the overall appearance.

  1. Shake well before use! Consumption approx. 100 ml per m2
  2. Depending on the degree of wood graying, apply pure or diluted 1:3 with water to the pre-wetted wood and brush into the wood in the direction of the grain using a root brush.
  3. After 15 minutes exposure time, brush off the dissolved graying with a root brush and water.
  4. For larger areas, work in sections and repeat the process if necessary.
  5. Then rinse well with clear water.
